Helping working families make it
Nearly 37 million Americans go without some basic necessities, such as food, shelter, medical care. For one out of every three working families with young children, income alone is not enough to make it. I wonder what that number is in Garrett County?
How would we measure whether families can make ends meet living in Garrett County? It's not using the Federal Poverty Line. What we need requires an examination of the real costs that families face when purchasing necessary goods and services at market prices and the real consequences for families that fall below that level.
The latest census data says about 12.4% of us are on or below the federal poverty line. I would argue that there are quite a few more people that struggle as the working poor if we were to be evaluated using our county's market prices. I guess that's one reason people from this area tend to be so resourceful and help one another so often!
